A meeting with the King: Meeting God in the Bible

The sweet, warm smell of a vanilla sponge cake. A piping hot cup of tea freshly brewed. All prepared in advance, your seat at the table ready and waiting for your arrival. Butterfly’s dance in your stomach, you want to run in the opposite direction, but something is drawing you towards the table and the captivating person waiting for you to arrive.
How long have you waited for this moment? You can’t remember when you received the invitation, but it feels like forever. Finally, you are going to get the answers to your deepest questions, the doubts that gnaw and nudge at you will soon be gone, you will receive the strength you need for the journey ahead.
Surely you must be the most favoured person in all the earth to be chosen for this honour? An intimate conversation with the King. Let me be clear! I am talking about the King of Kings, Almighty God, Lord of Lords, the AM I that I AM!
Just imagine it, just let your mind entertain this ludicrous idea for just a moment, tea, cake and conversation with God!
Could there be anything more wonderful or terrifying? Eye to eye and face to face with the one who created you and loves you completely. It reminds me of the song written by Bart Marshall Millard, I can only imagine. The words say:
Surrounded by Your glory
What will my heart feel
Will I dance for You, Jesus
Or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in Your presence
Or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah
Will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine
Truly I can only imagine. The truth is I have no idea what I will do when I meet Jesus but I do now I long to meet Him. I long to know His heart, to lay my head on His chest and hear His heart beating in my ears. To know God fully and completely. Do you share this desire? Is that what led you here today?
It was this desire to know God that led me to read the Bible before I believed in Jesus and began to follow Him. Growing up with a grandfather who was a pastor, I believed there was a God, but I didn’t know much about him, and I knew even less about Jesus. When I began to read the Bible I was searching, curious and stubborn. I was not prepared to commit to becoming a Christian before I read the small print!
At the start, I planned to read the entire Bible before making my decision, but God had different plans. Before I could finish reading the Bible (it took me three years), I met Jesus in the Bible, and he revealed God the Father to me. I met the King, His Word convicted and convinced my heart. Through His Word, I began to see a glimpse of who He was. His nature, His character, His heart. My life has never been the same since.
The Bible: the perfect meeting place
That’s why I am so passionate about God’s Word because it transforms you. It transcends time and space, reaching deep into your heart and invading your life. At times it takes you by surprise. You can read the Bible day after day without much event or incident then suddenly, seemly out of nowhere the word jumps off the page and hits you. Through the power of the spirit of God, the Word is opened up to you, and you understand it in a way that you never have before. You see God in a way that you never have before.
I don’t know about you, but if someone told me there was gold in my back garden, I wouldn’t stop digging until I found it (I don’t have a garden but imagine I do for the purpose of this analogy!). Well in the Bible you can find something more wonderful then silver and more precious than gold, God Himself. It’s time to start (or continue) digging!
At times finding God can seem like searching for hidden treasure, but I believe it is hidden in plain sight (Matthew 7:7). That’s why this month on my blog I am going to be exploring how to discover and unlock the power of God’s Word.
We may not be able to sit face to face with God just yet, but we can hear from Him and have a conversation with Him through prayer and His word (tea and cake too if that’s your thing!)
Be intentional about seeking God in His word
Now is the time to be intentional about opening up the Word of God so that He can open up our understanding of who He is. We can and should have a one on one relationship with God through the Holy Spirit, through prayer and His word. We don’t have to live off words other’s have already chewed for us ready to digest. Instead we can feast on ‘every word that comes from the mouth of God’ (Matthew 4:4) and as a result, be changed by it.
There is a place at the table prepared especially for you, take your seat and dig into God’s Word for you. It’s time to meet the King!
